Art mini print - Princess & the Pea, Hans Christian Andersen fairytale

Art mini print inspired the Danish fairy tale 'The Princess & The Pea', published by Hans Christian Andersen in the 1830s.

A young woman seeks shelter from the rain at a castle, claiming to be a princes. To prove her identity, a pea is placed under several mattresses and feather beds - if she really is a princess, the theory runs, she will be able to feel it. True enough, the princess wakes after a terrible night's sleep, and reveals her bruised back. The prince of the castle is so impressed with her dainty sensitivity, as proof of her high birth, that he choose her as his wife.
